Andy Hessenthaler believes Gillingham can clinch promotion next season.
Although the Gills still have a chance of making the League Two playoff places this term, it is unlikely they will force themselves into a top seven position.
Hessenthaler accepts this has come as a big disappointment to the fans, but he has made a pledge to lead them to promotion to League One next season.
"They (supporters) are going to be frustrated because they expected promotion, so did the chairman and so did the board and the players," he told the club's official website.
"If we miss out on the play-off positions over the next three games then we need to look at rebuilding again in the summer. Hopefully next year we can get things right.
“Hopefully we can have bit of luck pre-season in not getting injuries. The chairman has backed me for the last two years; we will kick on and make it happen next year."
