Carlos Cuellar could be heading to Sunderland Football Club.

The Spanish defender has been released by Aston Villa at the end of his contract, and he was expected to clinch a move back to his homeland.

However, Martin O’Neill, who bought Cuellar to the Midlands, is said to want him at the Stadium of Light, and such a move now appears a distinct possibility.

"I would like to stay in England," said the 30-year-old player. "I love the football, I love the people and I love the country. My best option is to stay in this country.”
