Middlesbrough may have to cash in on £12million Downing
Middlesbrough Football Club could yet be forced into selling Stewart Downing.
The winger is a target for Tottenham Hotspur this month, but despite handing in a transfer request, Boro have rejected at least two bids from the Londoners.
But with Gareth Southgate’s side facing a fight against relegation this season, they may have to cash in on £12million-rated Downing to fund their own raid into the transfer market.
"There is no money to strengthen the squad but we have good players here and we have to get the best out of them and pick up results," Southgate told the Evening Gazette.
"Of course we would love to inject some money into the squad, but we are still competing on the same level and we have to put together a team which improves the situation we are in.
"Now we have to grind on. We need to take something out of every game. We are what we are and we have got what we have got until the end of the season.
"We are still in touching distance of the middle of the table and that's what we are aiming for. Everybody will stick together and we will fight to get where we want to be."
