Newcastle United Football Club hope to tie up a deal for Peter Lovenkrands this week.

The former Rangers winger is available on a free transfer after having his contracted terminated at German club Schalke by mutual consent.

The Danish international had been offered a week-long trial with the Magpies but has impressed after just two days, and Joe Kinnear is keen to strike a deal for the player.

"We have spoken about him staying with me until the end of the season and then looking at it at the end of the season, and that's the position we find ourselves in at the moment," he said.

"He is happy to do that, so hopefully we can tie something up and make something permanent at the end of this week for the rest of the season."
