Colchester have signed Simon Hackney from Carlisle United.

The 24-year old, who began his career at Liverpool, has made over 100 appearances for the Cumbrian side and moves for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

Colchester had an initial bid rejected last week and Colchester boss Paul Lambert was delighted to complete the signing telling the club website,

"I saw him play for Carlisle against Crewe while I was out of work at the beginning of the season.

"I've had him watched since then and just feel he can do a job for us at this level. He is direct and will add to what we already have in the squad."
