Harper deal doesn’t lead Given to Manchester City
Just because Steve Harper has been handed a new contract, Chris Hughton insists this doesn’t mean Shay Given is on his way to Manchester City Football Club.
Newcastle United number goalkeeper Harper penned a new deal which keeps him at St James Park until 2012 on Tuesday, but this doesn’t necessarily mean Given is heading to City.
"The only thing to read into it is that what we would like to do is keep the quality individuals here," said United assistant boss Hughton. "We have never seen Steve Harper as a No.2.
“We have seen him as a keeper who is pushing for a No.1 spot. What he has had in front of him is a top goalkeeper in Shay Given, who has served this club very, very well."
