Obafemi Martins could be in contention for Newcastle United Football Club when their Premier League season resumes on 22 February.

The Nigerian has not played since 12 January due to a hernia operation, but he should be back for the Everton match in twelve days time.

"Oba had a fitness test on Friday, but after a long chat we decided there was a big risk factor if he didn't feel 100 per cent right,” said Joe Kinnear.

"So we didn't risk him. Now he has a little break to get right for Everton. I knew that I didn't have to take such a big risk with him because Peter Lovenkrands can also play in the same position."

A 3-2 win at West Bromwich Albion has given the Magpies some breathing space at the wrong end of the table, although they remain just four points ahead of the relegation zone.
