According to reports, Newcastle United Football Club will make an approach for Steve Bruce at the end of the season.

Current Magpies manager Joe Kinnear is currently recovering from a triple heart bypass operation, which could rule him out for the rest of the term.

In any event the former Wimbledon boss is only contracted until the summer, when it is widely expected United will appoint a permanent boss.

And the Daily Mirror claim Wigan Athletic manager Bruce has emerged as the choice of Mike Ashley, who will make an approach in the summer.

The Latics boss has long been considered as a potential successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, but a return to the North East to manage the club he supported as a boy would be equally tempting.
