Spurs keeper Gomes a goner this summer?
09:55 AM 23 February, 2009
Heurelho Gomes' insistence that he is Spurs' number one goalkeeper may result in him leaving the club this summer.

The winter transfer window arrival of Carlo Cudicini has pushed Gomes down the pecking order and, though the 27-year-old Brazilian would like to see out his four-year contract at White Hart Lane, he may have to move on to pastures new for first-team football.

"It was disappointing to be left out of the Arsenal match earlier this month because I had told Harry I was ready to come back into the team," he told The Sun.

"I feel the club supports me and the chairman has told me I am his No 1.

"I don't feel threatened by Carlo because it is important for a club like Tottenham, with aspirations to challenge for honours, to have quality replacements for every position.

"I have at least three years left in my contract and intend to see them through.

"You are not going to see me happy on the bench, that's for sure.

"The absence of a keeper to stand in when I had a hip injury was one of our biggest problems this season.

"Having said that, I was signed to be the club's number one keeper and expect things to remain this way."

Nothing is a given in professional sport, especially the English Premier League. If his form was good - no problem!!But,alas,he has had too many nightmare games!! Warming the bench has improved/revived countless footballing careers!
