Gekas must wait for Portsmouth chance
06:53 PM 26 February, 2009
Theofanis Gekas has been told to wait for his Portsmouth chance.

The Greek international has been left kicking his heels at Fratton Park, following his January loan move from Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Pompey coach Guy Whittingham has urged the striker to show patience in his bid to force his way into Paul Hart’s side.

"Theo hasn't had a chance yet, but I think it's mainly down to the system we're playing," Whittingham told The News.

"He is very much a goalscorer. But the system we are playing with one man up front, we need someone who can bring other people into the game.

"He would need to play up front with Peter Crouch or Kanu. Him and David Nugent are the type of players who look to get in behind defences.

"Nuge will do a lot of running around the pitch, he will chase defenders and work so hard for the team. But Gekas will just look to goal-hang.

"He will work hard for the side as well, but with a player like that, you want him to expend his energy in the right areas and do what he does best.

"But between now and the end of the season, I think all of the squad will be involved somewhere along the line."
