Steve Harper has a huge role to play at Newcastle United, as Chris Hughton reveals.

The 34-year-old has finally become number one choice for the Magpies following Shay Given’s exit, and his first job will be to help the club maintain its Premier League status.

“He is the longest-serving player here,” said caretaker boss Hughton.

"For the Manchester United game, he was captain, so that shows how he is looked upon at this club, and he is vitally important because of his position and the person he is."
