Sunderland should stick with Reliable Ricky
09:51 AM 14 April, 2009
Alan Nixon of the Daily Mirror claims that Sunderland may ask Alan Curbishley to become their emergency new manager.

He cites Sunderland's bad run of results and seeing as the last win came early in February, it is certainly poor by any team's standards.

Yet, the opposition has to be taken into consideration: Arsenal (unbeaten this year), Liverpool (genuine title challengers), in-from Spurs and top-of-the-table Manchester United were never going to be easy points in the bag.

Losing at home to Wigan was obviously a blow, as were defeats at West Ham and Manchester City, but surely not shocking enough to produce a knee-jerk reaction like appointing Curbs.

The former West Ham boss can't even take the reins until after the crucial home game against Hull, and if Sunderland have any sense they may just decide to
trust Ricky Sbragia.

Certainly, the quality of the opposition Ricky's had must be taken into account, but it is the manner of the defeats which will bury him. Tactical naievety of the level he showed on Saturday, putting on Paul McShane and Daryl Murphy, two of the worst players in the current squad when he had Ben Haim and Healy on the bench, has been the hallmark of Ricky's reign at Sunderland, and the sooner he's gone the better both for the club and for his reputation.
