Upson off to Arsenal as defender signs for West Ham?
11:05 AM 16 April, 2009
The Daily Mirror claims that Matthew Upson is gagging for European football, so could be set for a return to his former club Arsenal if West Ham fail to qualify for the Europa League.

Many Arsenal fans believe Arsene Wenger let Upson leave too early and too cheaply when he was sold to Birmingham for just £1m (the Gunners losing £1m on the transaction as they'd forked out £2m to Luton prior to that).

Arsenal would no doubt welcome Upson back, but West Ham will be reluctant to sell and will want expect to at least recoup the £6m they paid Birmingham for the centre back.

Qualification for the Europa League seems unlikely given West Ham's tough run-in: Aston Villa (a), Chelsea (h), Stoke City (a), Liverpool (h), Everton (a), and Middlesbrough (h).

But then again, the Hammers have taken points from games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool this season, so anything's possible for this promising side.

Meanwhile, defender Herita Ilunga has been signed on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee from Toulouse and has put pen to paper on a contract to keep him at Upton Park until 2013.

Won't buy an English layer huh? So I suppose Walcott is from the Faroe Islands? Stop talking garbage about Wenger and his reluctance to sign English players. They are expensive and very few of them are worth jack all. There's a reason why they're so terrible in international football. They can't even consistently make the WC or Euros, which already shows that compared to most of Europe, they're overrated. Capello has them playing efficient, effective football but it's nowhere near the standard you should expect from the kind of players they have and the clubs they play for.

So just because I've bought a teenage kid from Southampton that's reason to admit that I buy English, don't be so stupid. My buying policy is buying cheap kids from anywhere and the reason I do it from the continent is due to loopholes in their player registrations, whereby they can't sign pro forms until they're 18. When blatter talks about "slave trades" and playing home grown talent, he's looking at that plastic stadium they call the Emirates. A joke wannabe Club that got lucky with me and once I've gone they'll resort back to playing in half empty stadiums.

aphammer, I expect a more informed reply from an Iron, Wenger does buy english. Upson, like Bentley, Pennent, Cuntley all left Arsenal way too early. They all thought they were bigger then the club an to their detriment have all ended up poorer for it.

Another unlikely story. Wenger will never admit that he has made an error neither will he buy an \english player.
