Getting there and local information
The Sunderland Stadium of Light is located just outside the city centre. There are plenty of parking spaces in and around the city centre and avoiding the immediate vicinity of the ground on match days is recommended. The Club runs a free and efficient "park and ride" scheme on all match days which also helps with traffic congestion around the ground.
A Metro station is has recently been built just a 2 minute walk away from the ground. This links directly to the town centre and is essential if the planned south stand extension is to be built.
By Road:
From North take the A19 to junction A1231 Sunderland North. Follow signs for Sunderland, signs will then direct you to the aforementioned park and ride car park area.
For fans arriving by train a connection via Durham station is usually essential except for the odd transpenine express service. Trains from Durham to Sunderland are plentiful and relatively inexpensive so are highly recommended.
Their is usually an atmosphere of friendliness around Sunderland and none of the Pubs are off limit to away fans except when Newcastle are in town. Most of the pubs around the city centre have vastly reduced prices on match days in order to attract customers as competition is fierce on match days.
The atmosphere inside the ground varies depending on recent results, opponent and the like, but is usually frightening. The old 'Roker Roar' was successfully transplanted to the SoL, and guarantees a fearsome welcome for visiting supporters and players alike.
The Stadium of Light is a shining example of stadia technology and should be considered by the F.A when they look to revamp Wembley. Built on time and within its budget, the stadium is a fantastic monument to the people of Wearside, past, present and future.
The club also offers fans an exclusive, behind the scenes tour of the stadium, which allows a unique insight into the running of such a massive mecca. Check out the stadium tour review, for more details.
